Match Report – Under 12 Girls – Round 8, 2019

U12 Girls – Bayswater vs South Croydon

Our first home game for a few weeks against South Croydon, and more importantly our first win at home. Whilst the ground was quite muddy in the middle, the weather was great and allowed us to have a fairly convincing win 43 – 0. With a late change for captain, Kayla stepped up and preformed great in this role.

We were able to get away to a quick start with some awesome centre clearances and then kick a couple of goals in the first quarter. Usually starting in the backline Summer played the first quarter in the forward line and kicked our opening goal. The girls have been working hard at training on helping their teammates on the field by using their voice to give direction and providing support by way of shepherding to allow a team mate to have time to dispose of the ball. These acts don’t require the girls to touch the ball or have a disposal, however they play a big part in HELPING the team. Again this week there were clear signs of improvement as there were plenty of shepherds made.

Where games are one sided we try to rotate the girls more so than usual so everyone gets involved. This week it was fantastic to see Kiara and Acacia score their first goals. Well done girls!! Our other goal scorers were Elena and Matilda with two. Whilst it’s great to celebrate the goal scorers there is so much hard work that is put in to allow the goals to be kicked. Our tackling was a little off in the first quarter, however the pleasing thing to note is that the message from the coaches to tackle harder, is well received and the girls step up when needed. Whilst the scoreboard indicated an easy win there were moments early in the game where the ball was headed to the oppositions forward line and the backline scrambled and worked hard to get it out. Thanks to Gemma, Kendall, Shaylee and Zoe for playing on the opposition team for a quarter each this week.

Three wins in a row, however next weeks game will be a tough one as we play the undefeated Upper Ferntree Gully. Last time we met was four weeks ago and we lost 49 – 0. A great challenge for the girls as a team, which is what footy is all about. If the girls footy has improved as much as their socialising at training has, I’m sure we can narrow that gap.

A couple of big outs for the next few weeks with Hailey and Craig away on holidays. We have Sydney’s dad Matt stepping into Craigs running shoes and I’m sure the girls will all lift in Haileys absence. Bring on that challenge!
