Match Report – Under 12 Girls – Round 9, 2019

U12 Girls – Bayswater vs Upper FTG

After three good wins and a lot of confidence, it was always going to be difficult against Upper Ferntree Gully who are undefeated and have rarely been scored against. To make matters worse the weather was the coldest we have had all year with thick fog making it difficult to see the play on the other side of the ground.

A slow start didn’t help as UFTG scored 26 points in the first quarter while we couldn’t put anything on the board. The last three quarters were a lot better as UFTG kicked 22 points to our one. Final score at the end of the day UFTG 48, Bayswater 1.

Despite the tough game which was one sided on the scoreboard there were some really good stand out efforts:

  • Acacia was our captain for the day and played on ball most of the game doing well to pick up the ball and kick forward.
  • Skye played the last half as a ruck rover and performed well getting plenty of kicks and tackled hard when she didn’t have the ball.
  • Kiara who usually plays in the backline played in the ruck and had many tap outs to advantage.
  • Summer played a solid game across half back where the ball spent a lot of time and when kicking out from behinds hit her target more often than not.
  • Matilda kept her head over the ball whenever it was her turn to burrow in and get the ball.
  • Charlie played the last quarter in a tagging role on the opposition no. 7 who had plenty of the footy in the first three quarters. It was great to see Charlie pushing her opponent to make the last quarter as difficult as possible for her.
  • Still a long way to go to narrow the gap on the top team. We’ll need to spend a lot of the back half of the season explaining game play and how to stay involved even when the ball is not in the direct playing area the girls are playing in. A lot is said about using your voice and talking to give direction, which is important in any team game, however we may need to add that listening is just as important when HELPING your teammates.
