  • Update On COVID-19 – EFNL JUNIOR SEASON CANCELLATION - 10th July

    Update: 10th July 2020 – JOINT STATEMENT – 2020 COMPETITIONS CANCELLED

The Eastern Football Netball League, in conjunction with the Northern Football Netball League, Essendon District Football League, Western Region Football League and South East Juniors wishes to issue a statement regarding the 2020 season.

Following the State Government’s announcement of a return to Stage 3 restrictions in Metropolitan Melbourne for six weeks commencing July 9, the EFNL, NFNL, EDFL, WRFL and SEJ have collectively decided to cancel all football and netball competitions for the 2020 season.

The common view was that cancelling all competitions for the 2020 season was the only viable decision in the best interest of all clubs, participants, and the wider community.

All leagues and their member clubs have a clear obligation to prioritise the health and safety of all participants and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a duty to minimise the burden on all club volunteers during this unprecedented time.

The leagues are committed to working closely with their member clubs, AFL Victoria, and Netball Victoria to manage the associated issues related to the cancellation of all 2020 competitions and working towards a return to play next season.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank all clubs, players, parents, volunteers, officials, umpires and league partners for their patience, support and understanding throughout these challenging times.

Please stay safe and we urge all associated with our respective communities to heed the advice and regulations in place by order of the State Government.

We all have a role to play in ensuring our community remains safe and healthy and that we can all return to football and netball next season.

All clubs are reminded that club-sanctioned training and events are prohibited until at least August 19, as per Stage 3 restrictions.

Further updates will be provided in due course via your respective league.

We understand that we will have 1000’s of devastated players following today’s news, but this is a public health issue and one that is outside of our control.

    This is bigger than football.

  • Update On COVID-19 – April 15th

The Victorian Government recently announced that the current State of Emergency and Stage 3 restrictions, which commenced on the 31st of March, have been extended until midnight May 11.

That decision means there will be no change to the May 31 2020 season postponement date. This means that all club training, events, ground, and light usage remains suspended until further notice.

The Metropolitan Leagues will continue to work with the AFL and await the outcome of Government’s decision on the 11th May, as to whether restrictions will be maintained, reduced, or lifted and/or whether any exemptions would be made for community sport.

A half season commencing on the 13th of June or the 20th of June, should community football and netball be allowed to recommence, would be the most viable option for season 2020.

The Eastern Football Netball League remain committed to the health and wellbeing of its players, coaches, umpires, volunteers, and associated stakeholders and are steadfast about ensuring the long-term sustainability of all its clubs.

Recently a Covid-19 survey was sent to all Eastern Football Netball League clubs to help gauge their views on the current situation. We received 62 responses which provided the following key findings.

    Junior Clubs

50% of Clubs answered YES to cancelling the season
87% of Junior Clubs answered YES to participating in Lightning Premiership or POOL type round robin competitions
    Senior Clubs

44% of Clubs answered YES to cancelling the season
44% of clubs do not believe they will be financially capable of paying a tiered salary cap starting with a $50,000 being the maximum given the impact of COVID 19.
84% of clubs are supportive of lower player payment caps for season 2020, 2021 and 2022
A further update on season 2020 will be provided following the Metropolitan League CEO’s and AFL meeting on Tuesday 12th May 2020, which coincides with the decision on Victoria’s State of Emergency Stage 3 restrictions which as previously mentioned, is currently set to end at midnight on Monday the 11th May 2020.

Currently the Eastern Football Netball League office remains closed, but our staff are available by phone, zoom or email to provide ongoing support to our clubs.
