U16 Girls Match Report
Round 1
Today we played Boronia at their ground.
Unfortunately we are a little low on numbers and with a couple of girls unable to play so we only had 11 to take the field.
Boronia sent a few players over to even up the numbers.
We had a really good first quarter. Our effort level was high, our talk was good and we made a lot of effort to get in all the right spots to give us the best opportunity to drive the ball forward. We took a good lead at quarter time.
The second quarter was much more even. The effort level was still really good but we just weren’t picking up their players enough so something we would work on in the third quarter.
Unfortunately we lost 2 players at half time so we had to play 2 players short which was just too hard. They were still trying very hard but with 2 extra players on the field, Boronia were able to kick goals.
The last quarter got even worse for our numbers with another player unable to play so now we were 3 players short for the last quarter. Boronia came home strong and it just hurt us too much having 3 less players on the field.
We ended up losing 62-38. The girls didn’t stop trying, which was very pleasing.
Goals. Liv Haun 2, Haylee 2, Ella 2
Best. Matilda, Liv Haun, Ella, Marley, Milly, Saanvi
Round 2
This round was a BYE
Round 3
Today we played North Ringwood at their ground. Exciting day to play showing our respect to the Anzacs. With no change rooms to use, the warm and match prep was a little different but all the girls had turned up with a great attitude and with a few new girls playing their first game, we had enough numbers to play a full side.
We started the game really well. The intensity was good and we had more of the ball so looked to be in control early on.
This stayed the same for most of the game. If we had kicked straighter, we would have extended our lead a lot more. There were some moments in the game when we were too loose and not picking up our players enough but we tightened up at the right times and the leaders stood up to turn this around.
Overall, a good win for the girls.
Matilda was awarded the Anzac medal by the other team.
We won 41-8. We kicked 5-11 so goal kicking practice for us this week.
Goals. Matilda 2, Marley, Saanvi, Liv Haun
Best. Marley, Haylee, Milly, Matilda, Shayla, Gemma, Ella, Liv Haun
Round 4
Today we played SBL Tigers and we knew it would be a tough game looking at their previous results and where they were on the ladder.
The girls seemed quite focused to play well leading up to the start of the game.
As we expected, it was of high standard and the girls very quickly adjusted and started the game very well. The girls were working very hard all over the ground which made the game very close. In the second quarter we didn’t slow down at all which was fantastic.
They were playing very well and you could see they were enjoying the result of working hard.
We went in at half time in front so our focus in the third quarter was to continue what we had started. We had another really good quarter and extended our lead to 2 goals.
In the last quarter, you could see we were getting tired having no bench to rotate and the other team having a full bench. 2 of our players got injured and had to come off and we ended up just falling short of the win by 2 points.
Our best game so far this year.
We lost 28-26
Goals. Shaylee 3, Liv Halse
Best. Haylee, Marley, Matilda, Liv, Liv, Saanvi, Tiarnah, Chloe
Round 5
Today we played Boronia at their home ground. Unfortunately we had a few players out so we turned up with 13 players. Boronia gave us 2 players each quarter to even up.
We started the game a bit slow. Although we were trying hard, we were too loose on our players and our attack on the ball was a little down than usual so for the first half , Boronia were able to control the play more than us.
After having a chat at half time about what we needed to work on to improve, the second half was a different story. We were really good in the third quarter. Getting in the right positions and an vast improvement in our attack on the ball had us controlling the ball for most of the third quarter but we were unable to put the goals on the board. The last quarter was fairly even but playing 1 short in the last quarter made things pretty hard.
I was very happy with our second half. We lost 50-12.
Goals. Haylee
Best. Matilda, Haylee, Marley, Gemma, Riann, Liv Halse, Saanvi.
Round 6
Today was Mother’s Day and we were playing Knox at their ground. It was a nice sunny day so ideal for footy and for the mums to watch their kids play footy.
We spoke before the game about keeping our game plan simple but everyone jumping on board so we were all working for the same goals. Halyee was also playing her 50th game so we were keen to get a good result for her milestone game.
We started off the game pretty well. We were getting the ball more than the other team and driving it forward. We had lots of scoring opportunities but unfortunately for us, we were kicking too many points. We really could’ve kicked away but kicking points wasn’t helping at all.
Although we were doing a lot of good things, we weren’t doing some simple things we knew we should be doing and this was making it a little frustrating and giving the opposition opportunities to move the ball into their forward line. We really needed to lift our talk, getting to the right spot, playing tighter on our opposition players and hitting the contest harder.
The next 2 quarters were pretty much the same so we weren’t able to extend our lead much that we had from quarter time. Although we were controlling the ball more, the game was still very close.
In the last quarter things changed. We did everything we had been talking about so we really dominated the last quarter. We put on 4 goals to nothing to really come home strong for a great win. This is how we know we can play.
We won 63-18.
Goals. Shaylee 3, Haylee 2, Marley 2, Olivia Halse
Best. Matilda, Haylee, Chloe, Milly, Shaylee, Liv Haun, Tiarnah, Riann.
Round 7
Today we played Heathmont at home. They were a few spots higher on the ladder than us so we knew it would be a tough game.
The ground was quite heavy due to all the rain we had but at least it wasn’t raining for our game.
There was strong wind blowing and we were kicking against the wind in the first quarter.
Heathmont started strong and with the wind, got a few goals up at quarter time. We had a few good plays but not as many as the other team. We were much better in the second quarter and had a lot more of the play but just missed a few scoring opportunities so we were down by a goal at half time. Our third quarter was ok but when we didn’t man up or talk to our team mates to help them, Heathmont made us pay and drove the ball forward to extend their lead.
We were hoping for a big last quarter but it didn’t quite work out as planned. Heathmont had a bit more of the ball in the first half of the quarter. We lifted in the second half of the quarter to get a goal back but we ended going down by 2 goals.
We lost 41-28.
There wasn’t much in it, we just need to work on a few little things to make our game more consistent.
Best. Matilda, Marley, Ella, Gemma, Milly, Chloe, Haylee, Shelby
Goals. Matilda 2, Shaylee Haylee
Round 8
Today we played North Ringwood at their ground. It definitely felt like a cold winters day and we had a lot of rain in the morning but it seemed to clear a bit for our game.
The ground was muddy and we definitely had to play wet weather footy.
The first quarter started pretty even until late in the quarter when we started to win more of the ball and kick a goal to be in front at quarter time. Although we were playing ok, we needed to definitely improve in a couple of areas to start paying how we wanted to play. In the second quarter we really stepped up. We had a lot more of the ball but struggled to capitalise on the scoreboard. In the third quarter we were really good again but this time we started to kick a few goals to get a good lead.
The last quarter was a bit more even but one of our players got hurt half way through the quarter so play got stopped and after a few more minutes the umpires decided to call the game early.
It was a good win in the end, 40-9.
Best- Matilda, Marley, Gemma, Haylee, Liv Haun, Liv Halse, Chloe Saanvi, Tiarnah.
Goals- Shayla 2, Halee 2, Liv Halse
Round 9
We played Waverley Blues at home today. The ground was a bit heavy due to previous rain and traffic on the ground but it was a nice sunny day for football.
They were very close to us on the ladder so it was going to be a good game. We were short a few players so we had 2 of the other teams players play on our team each quarter.
We started the game pretty well. We were competitive and it was fairly even but they were just winning a bit more of the ball than us and driving the ball forward. This put a lot of pressure on our backline but they continually worked hard and did really well although we were down at quarter time.
This seemed to be the trend for the whole game. We were competitive and we had our moments but they just worked a little harder than us resulting in them winning a bit more of the ball.
We ended up losing 21-10
Goals. Milly
Best. Matilda, Shayla, Marley, Haylee, Millie, Liv Haun, Gemma, Tiarnah
We need to improve what we do at training to then take into the game.
If our effort level at training improves and we work for each other more, we will definitely improve moving forward.
Round 10
Today we played Chirnside Park at home.
It was a really nice day for footy but the ground was pretty muddy due to the rain we had the night before.
I was really keen to have a good game and hopefully get back on the winners list.
Our main focus this week was talk. Talking to our teammates to help them, support them, let them know if they are hot or free and to be there to handball to so we kept possession of the ball.
The game started off pretty even. Both teams were working hard to win the ball. As the quarter went on, we started to win more of the ball and break free so we could move the ball forward. Our talking and support was really good, hence why we won more of the ball and were able to kick some goals in the second half of the quarter.
We really wanted to start the second quarter the way we finished the first. We certainly did that and more. Our forwards got into the right positions which gave us good targets to aim for. We were able to kick a few more goals and keep them scoreless.
At half time, we talked about a few little things we wanted to improve on and spoke about the things we were doing really well and wanted to continue doing those in the 2nd half.
Our second half was really good. Our forwards worked hard to try and kick some more goals and the backline worked really hard to stop the other team from kicking goals. We were able to kick a few more goals and stop the opposition from kicking a goal.
The girls were very happy with their effort today.
We won 82- 0
Goals. Haylee 6, Tiarnah 2, Marley, Matilda, Milly, Liv Halse.
Best. Haylee, Matilda, Chloe, Tiarnah, Shayla, Milly, Marley
Round 11
Today we had Boronia at home. Boronia were the top team so we were looking forward to the challenge because we have been improving every week. Our challenge every week is not having enough players and we were a little low on numbers again but hoping to get a few from the U14 to help out. We were only able to get 1 player which was fine so we played 15 on 15 but we had no one on the bench.
The game started off well. It was very even and both teams were working hard to get the ball into their forward lines. Most of how we were playing was really good, we just needed to keep working on a few little things to improve as a team.
The first 2 quarters were very even and we went in at half time only a couple of goals down. We had our opportunities but just weren’t able to kick the goals we wanted to.
Unfortunately 1 of our girls was injured and couldn’t play the second half so we had to play 1 short for the rest of the game.
The girls tried hard for the whole second half and we even outscored them in the last quarter but it wasn’t quite enough to get over the line.
We even had more scoring shots than the other team but just kicked too many points.
It was a very good effort by the girls.
We lost 26 – 18.
Goals. Haylee 2
Best. Matilda, Liv Haun, Haylee, Milly, Shaylee, Chloe, Marley, Ella.
Round 12
Today we played Blackburn at their ground. They were 3rd on the ladder so we knew it would be a tough game but with our team improving each week, I knew we had every chance of playing well.
The game started off well. It was very even and both teams were trying hard to move the ball forward for their team. We looked to be winning a bit more of the ball and the scoreboard showed that with us leading at quarter time. The second quarter played out much the same. Both teams had moments where they were controlling the ball but we outscored them in this quarter to be a couple of goals up at half time.
In the third quarter, Blackburn stepped it up a notch and we slackened off a bit allowing Blackburn to have more of the ball. Our Backline stood up very well and kept their score to a minimum and we got a late goal to stay in front.
We didn’t start the fourth quarter well and allowed Blackburn to kick a couple of goals but to the girls credit, they dug deep and turned things around for us to finish very well and get the win.
We won 45-29.
Goals. Haylee 3, Gemma, Liv Halse, Marley, Shaylee
Best. Liv Haun, Gemma, Saanvi, Milly, Matilda, Haylee, Chloe, Riaan, Haylee,
Round 13
We played Endeavour Hills at home today. A really nice day for footy even though our ground is still a little heavy, especially in the middle.
They were lower on the ladder than us so we were really keen to have a solid, good game and keep improving as we have been the last few weeks.
We didn’t start the game well. We weren’t switched on from the start and our effort and the intensity at the ball was a bit down from where it usually is.
The first quarter was fairly even until at the halfway mark where we lifted a bit and started to get more of the footy. We gave ourselves plenty of scoring opportunities but we missed a lot of goals that we should have got. We had a handy lead at quarter time.
This set the tone for the next 2 quarters. We had most of the play and started to get a few more goals. There were a few times where we slackened off but most of the time we were doing really well.
We really dominated the last quarter and had pretty much all of the play. Credit to the girls working hard right to the end and getting a big win.
We won 105-1
Goals. Matilda 4, Haylee 3, Marley 3, Tiarnah 2, Shaylee 2, Ella
Best. Marley, Milly, Haylee, Matilda, Chloe Tiarnah, Liv Haun, Ella, Riann.
