Match Report – Under 16 Girls – Round 2, 2019

U16 Girls – Bayswater vs Waverley Blues.

An overcast day for our first home game, which was also our ANZAC Round. With the help of Rana and Torey from the Under 14s, we had 16 players, as did our opponents Waverley Blues. Alanna was our captain for the day.

We got off to a good start, with Chloe kicking a goal from a set shot early in the first quarter. Waverley Blues hit back later in the quarter, and scores were tied at quarter time. In a similar pattern to last round, our opponents managed to string some goals together in both the second and fourth quarters, whilst we were held goalless. Pleasingly, we won the third quarter after a strong solo effort resulted in a goal to Em CT. Final scores saw Waverley Blues run out winners 2.4-16 to 8.4-52.

I felt like our inability to run for the whole quarter was the main thing which cost us, with Waverley Blues players being prepared to run harder for longer. We need to work on being more competitive in terms of staying one on one with our opponents for longer in games. Having said that, there were several positive signs from our girls. Firstly, I didn’t see us give away one undisciplined free kick, and it looked like we played the game in the right spirit; a big improvement from Round 1. Our voice seemed good, although on a couple of occasions we had two players spoil each other in what should have resulted in a simple mark. Although sometimes I think we rushed to throw the ball on the boot when we could have taken more time, several girls took good marks during the game, and there were a couple of nice handball chains. As usual, it looked like everyone across the field managed to get their hands on the ball fairly often; a good overall team effort.

Chloe received the ANZAC medal as the player who the Waverley Blues’ coach thought played with the ANZAC spirit.

Thank you to water carrier Dante, trainer Jodie and team manager Mandy, assistant coach and runner Ben, and our other parent helpers on the day.
