U13 Mixed Match Report
Round 1
Coming off a strong practice match win last week against Chirnside Park, the team showed plenty of encouraging signs leading into Round 1—and they didn’t disappoint. Although the scoreboard didn’t reflect the effort, there were lots of positives to take away. With continued coaching and development over the season, there’s no doubt the scoreboard will start to reflect the hard work these kids are putting in.
Nineteen eager players took to the field, bursting with energy and enthusiasm. We were just shy of a full squad, with Zane ‘the Recruit’ unfortunately out due to injury, and both Ethan ‘Pocket Pro’ and Assistant Coach Andrew away on family holidays. We certainly missed their presence on game day, but the group rallied together to give their best effort. From the opening bounce to the final siren, our players showed great determination, teamwork, and a never-give-up attitude.
It was a special round as we welcomed several first-time players to the team: Cobe, Jhett, Jack, Brooklyn, Charli, and Zane. All have brought great energy and potential to the group. We’re excited to see what they bring throughout the season, and Zane especially—we know he’s just as eager as we are to see him back on the field soon once his ankle heals.
Every single player contributed to the team effort in this match. Some standout performances included Indi ‘the midfield machine’ powering through the middle with confidence, breaking lines and giving the team great drive out of the centre. Cobe ‘the Tassie boot’ impressed with his booming kicks, helping us gain territory and launch into attack. Hayden ‘the Riser’ stepped up in the second half with a strong defensive effort, shutting down opposition plays and helping hold our backline together. Josh ‘the little warrior’ showed great determination in the ruck rover role—winning contested footy, applying pressure, and fighting hard for every possession. Liam ‘the Crusher’ had a big game through the midfield, racking up touches and applying consistent pressure when the opposition had the ball. Grace ‘the Ruck Queen’ battled hard in the ruck, holding her own against bigger opponents and giving our midfielders first use at the stoppages. Tigerlily ‘the Wing Warrior’ made an impact early in the forward line and then played a vital role on the wing—chasing hard and applying relentless pressure all day. Mackenzie ‘the Breakout Star’ brought real energy in the forward pocket, attacking the ball fearlessly and putting defenders under pressure every chance she got.
We rotated players through different positions throughout the match, and it was fantastic to see how well everyone adapted. Many players were trying new roles, and the willingness to learn and play for the team stood out. As those new combinations settle in, we’re already seeing the foundations of a really exciting team. The communication, support, and positive attitude from the group were brilliant—players lifting each other, sticking together, and showing real heart from start to finish.
A massive thank you to all the families who came out to cheer on the team, and those that took on the roles to make the game go ahead, your presence on the sidelines means the world to the kids and really lifts their spirits.
With Round 1 now behind us, the focus shifts to training and building on what we’ve learned so far. We’ll return to training on Monday, and we hope all the kids enjoy a well-deserved school holiday break in the meantime. With two byes ahead of us, we’ll return to action in three weeks for Round 2—u13’s rest up, recharge, and get ready to go again!
Round 2
Rowville Knights v Baysie
Venue: Eildon Park (Away Game)
Final Score: Rowville Knights 98 – Bayswater 6
Round 2 saw us return to Eildon Park to take on a strong Rowville Knights side. It was a tough outing, with the final score not reflecting the effort and determination shown by our group across key patches of the game.
We were down a few key players this week, with Zane, Jackson, and Daniel all unavailable — and their presence was certainly missed. But the group rallied well, and despite the challenge, there were periods of the game, particularly in the second and third quarters, where we lifted and made it a much more contested game.
Our efforts were rewarded in the final quarter, with Will kicking a great goal after a solid team build-up. It was a well-earned moment and a highlight of the day.
A key focus going forward will be movement — too often we stood still and watched, rather than running to space or chasing defensively. That’s something we can control, and we’ll be working hard on it at training.
To the players: this game showed that even under pressure, we have the grit to respond and keep working. Let’s build on that resilience and keep improving week by week.
To the parents: thank you again for your support from the sidelines — especially at away games. Your presence and encouragement make a huge difference to the players.
Special mention to Tigerlily, being awarded the Anzac Medal from Rowville. Well done Tiger, you stood out, playing an amazing game, not only for Andrew and I, but also to the opposition!
We regroup this week, hit the track with intent, and look to bounce back in Round 3.
Round 3
🏉 Round 3 Match Report: Chirnside Park vs Bayswater
Venue: Kimberley Reserve (Away Game)
In Round 3 we took on Chirnside Park at Kimberley Reserve in another physical contest. While the scoreboard didn’t fall our way, there were great signs of growth and determination across the game.
A massive congratulations to Jackson, who played his 50th game — a fantastic achievement and a testament to his commitment to the team. Well done, Jackson!
Our tackling pressure was a highlight, with Zach and Liam leading the way. Their second and third efforts set the standard and gave us great energy around the contest. Kai also stood out with his defensive pressure, applying repeat efforts that helped force turnovers and slow Chirnside’s momentum.
We saw moments of outstanding team play too — including a great goal from Hayden, and a textbook rebound out of defence that ended with Ethan converting a goal. These were terrific examples of what we can achieve when we play as a team and move the ball with intent.
In the ruck, Grace continued her strong form, competing hard and giving our midfielders a chance to win first possession. Tyler and Indi also provided valuable support, working hard around the ground and helping link up between the arcs.
We’ll continue to focus on:
Being first to the footy
Running both ways
Staying involved off the ball
To the players: great effort across the board. Keep bringing your intensity, and keep lifting each other — the progress is showing.
To the parents and supporters: thanks again for all your help and support from the sidelines. It gives the players a real boost.
Let’s bring that Baysie energy into Round 4!
Go Baysie 💚💛
