U14 Mixed Match Report
Round 1
Hi all,
What a great start to the season!
We started the match against Montrose with the celebration of life, they had asked us to join in the circle in the middle of the ground to honour the life of a former coach, his last game coaching was against Bayswater.
The game was played in great spirits from the get go, our boys were low on numbers as we started with 14 (Montrose graciously gave us 2 players each qtr) so we could play a 16 v 16 game. The boys were fired up from the start, after some nerves eased the boys settled in playing Bayswater football.
The emphasis before the game was playing as a team, and staying true to our pyramid of success. The boys showed determination, perseverance, and persistence, which then led to building of character, finally showing leadership, therefore we reached success, which came from all levels of our team both on and off the field.
Our boys really busted a gut every single qtr of the game, Shaun, Ben and myself are very pleased with how these boys are tracking right now. Even though the final siren sounded and the result didn't go our way, it was a great game to watch young men! You took every free kick against us on the chin and stayed disciplined all day long, even when you all had ZERO ENERGY, credit to you boys let's keep that up.
We welcomed a couple of new faces to the club, Darcy and Riley H, playing their first official game in the green and gold. Cooper officially played his 50th game which we'll celebrate at our next home game, along with Charley who will play his 50th game against North Ringwood. Let's get a big home crowd to that game, also being Anzac round.
Great performances by all but these guys deserve a special mention this week:
Darcy, Cooper, Riley H, Maison, Phoenix, and Marley
Our captain also played a great captains game onward and upward Lachy.
Thanks guys,
The coaching group
Round 2
Hi BJFC U14's,
Round 2 started wonderfully with the celebration of ANZAC day.
The boys were introduced to Sargent Sharelle Sturgeon, current serving officer of the Australian Army, who gave the boys a rousing speech about the origins of our ANZAC traditions. Sharelle went on to explain the ANZAC spirit is all about ; Mateship, courage, sacrifice and endurance, everything our boys showed on the field. Thankyou Sharelle for being part of this special day!
Charley and Cooper celebrated their 50th and 51st, after running through their banners we warmed up linked arms and joined in the traditional ANZAC round ceremony. The boys were really fired up in the first qtr kicking 5 goals straight. The flow of the game was headed in one direction from the get go. Our boys talked more on the field and moved the ball beautifully from the middle, and our link up play resulted in a first qtr win.
During the second qtr North Ringwood proved that they weren't going to lie down and concede defeat, they fought back strongly. Our passion to preserve our team mates and trust in them proved true during this qtr. We knuckled down and started moving the ball in bayswater fashion. The 3 man weave was once again a delight to see.
The third qtr had us maintaining our lead kicking 2. 2 for the qtr, and holding them only to 1.2. I moved the players around a bit in this qtr to see how we adapt and adapt . The boys are proving that they can be played in multiple positions, which is of great benefit to us as coaches. Our attack on the ball didn't waver. Marley and Maison had a great 1st half in the back line, so now it was Seth and Phoenix's turn to pick up that mantle and they did both, proving they are very capable forward and back.
The last qtr we started with a very strong middle, Lachy, Charley, Maison and Fin burst onto the scene creating early scoring opportunities. It was so wonderful to watch every player do his bit this week! During these times we created chances for people to score, Charley got a career high ( I think) 5 GOAL haul, Jaxson contributed with 2 of his own and was very happy with his game. The newer kids to the club are doing amazing with great contributions each week so far. The final result was a Win for BJFC u14.
Charley Dinnage was awarded the ANZAC day medal from Nth Ringwood to which Sharelle presented to him and the Nth Ringwood player of the day.
Mentions to: Darcy, Marley, Riley H, Henry, Ben and Maison stuck to your tasks all day no matter what they were.
Great team effort boys well done 👏,
Go BJFC u14
Cheers,
The team
Round 3
Hi BJFC U14s,
What a glorious day it was for football.
This week we played Wantirna south, again having only 16 players vs 24. This was not an ideal start for our boys. We had a few sore players still from the week before, and introduced the return of a past player Joel.
We started the game very competitively and held our own for most of it. In swirling winds we only managed 1. 2 for the first qtr. Our game structure and movement of the ball was looking great, with some taller bodies against us we tired, toward the end of that qtr.
The second and third quarters were looking very good early on. Yet again with our backs against the wall, we still played some great football, moving the ball in our fashion, this didn't help on the scoreboard though, kicking more points than goals. Wantirna south did capitalise on most of their scoring opportunities, letting the game slip out of our control. We suffered a couple of injuries during these two quarter's which left us very short on the field.
Going into the last quarter the game was all but gone. Our boys still stuck to our pyramid though, proving they are a very capable side when they choose to be. Their perseverance and determination stood tall and with only 13 players left on the ground they did everything they could to stay competitive.
Folks, as you are aware, I'm trying my best to keep our kids in good health and I don't want to risk their safety. We now have 18 listed players, so moving forward at the moment, we'll play 16 v 16 with two on the bench.
Guys all and all it was a positive game. Showing what 13 determined young men can achieve, when they put their collective minds together. Who are playing, effectively two teams each week.
Great efforts by these players today; Tom, Riley H, Ben, Joel, Fin, Marley and Maison.
They did not give up all day and kept putting one foot in
front of the other, doing what they could to move and stay competitive.
Last of all guys, the team wishes Cooper Leach "all the best" for his upcoming knee surgery.
Thanks guys,
Round 4
Hi everybody,
This week saw us clash against another (B grade team new to C), against Boronia.
I was feeling unwell so Shaun took the helm, doing all our match day prep, and speeches throughout the day. It was great to see the boys respond to Shaun. Thanks Shaun and team.
We welcomed another new kid to our team, Jakob. Welcome aboard and congratulations.
We had a 14v14 shoot-out, in the first half the boys didn't seem to be there. There was no intensity at the ball at all. We watched our players run away from us both on the board and on the ground. The half time score read 28 - 72.
Shaun and the team really rallied the boys over half time.
The boys came out looking like a new team. There was talk, shepherds, teamwork and most of all courage. This may not have reflected on the scoreboard, but it resonated highly with the Boronia team. They started getting frustrated with how effectively we can move the ball, and play Bayswater football.
The last qtr was our best by far, kicking 4.2, ending our day with a scoreline of 69 - 144. 10.9 for the entire day with 14 players is nothing to be ashamed of. We had some great transitions of play, intercept marks in the backline were on point, the link up play this created was amazing, leading to many scoring opportunities. With Lachy bagging 5 for the day.
Mentions today for these players who just kept fighting all day ;
Phoenix, Seth, Lachy, Marley, Cooper, Jakob and Maison.
We keep talking about our pyramid to success, and how we as a team need to switch on more at training and game day, let's get focused for a re match in round 5.
Remember boys ; courage isn't having the strength to go on, it's going on when you don't have the strength 💪
Stay strong go Baysie
Cheers,
The team
Round 5
Hi all,
What another great day for football.
We went into round 5 against Boronia for the second week in a row, this time on their turf.
We went into the game again with a 14 v 14, and started the game in a furious fashion, locking the ball in our forward 50 for most of the first qtr. The scoreline represents this only conceding 2 goals 2 points. The effort the boy's put in the first qtr was 100% better than the week before.
During the second and third quarters we had a few sore boys, which is obviously becoming the "norm" because of the determination, perseverance and persistence that YOU GUYS put in week in week out having low numbers. The character building that these tough games are giving some of our boys is amazing, we've seen kids like Ben, Phoenix, Jaxson and Tom, just to name a few come right out of their comfort zone attacking the ball and contest without hesitation.
The last term had us throw around some names on the board, trying to finish with some fun and heart. At that you did, you guys again were just as disciplined in the last qtr as the first. There were some great passages of play, once again link up football. Seth had a run in the ruck this time and with the help and determination of the mid field we scored 2. 2 in this qtr. Once again boys hold your heads up high, you never throw in the towel, you always stay positive and finish the game.
Some great efforts again by these players; Phoenix, Maison, Marley, Charley, Ben and Tom.
Well done guys keep up the great work.
Cheers,
The team.
Round 6
What another glorious day for footy, what an Indian summer we are having, the rain is coming though.
Today we played Noble Park, this was going to prove very testing for our boys. We welcomed back an old favourite Max Hughson, to the club, yet we are still under manned playing again a 14 v 14 game. Maison Murphy, and Finlay White both celebrated 50 games in great fashion.
The game started at a high velocity, both teams trying to edge eachother out. We started with a strong backline today so we could charge forward from defence, something that we have been working on for some years. This proved to be a win for us only conceding 2 . 4 to our 2 . 2.
The second quarter proved much the same as the first, it was a hard fought ball to get. This edged us in front though. As I've kept saying all year it's our heart and teamwork that gets these boys through, week in week out. I'm not going to harp on the game played by the opposition, because I feel that it's not worth our time, we know how the game was played. Once again I can't praise you boys enough for what you are doing as a team, and staying disciplined.
Going into the third quarter, we needed a good break and chat. Shaun's timing on the speech was perfect, "boys we can only control how we play football", was much of the sentiment. 100% of our boys came together as a team, this was proven in the 3rd especially, we dug deep, the talk lifted, we shared the ball and converted, kicking 4.1. The boys in the forward line were determined to keep that ball inside our 50, resulting in multiple attempts on goal. We are starting to have the trust in each other that is needed to be a great team.
In the last the boys really showed what they are made of, link up running, shepard's, voice and most all all DETERMINATION, PERSEVERANCE AND PERSISTENCE. Our vice captain's have really stepped up the last few weeks so well done, Cooper and Seth. Coming out with a win was an amazing team effort, boys well done. Final score 11.10. 76 to 4. 13. 37
To mention a few more people on our team is a must this week so here goes;
Finlay: started the year a bit unsure, but has really stepped up into his role at Bayswater, he's found his confidence, and seeing that his team have his back.
Phoenix: has been leading from the front, both at training and on game day. This is awesome to see.
Maison: has been yet another quiet achiever, once again proving his spot in our team week after week.
Marley: has been smashing it down back for most of our games. With some time in the middle to let him run free.
Ben: has come so far this year alone, his attack on the ball is becoming second to none, love that I can start you down back, then move you forward to hopefully get a goal.
Henry: who's heart is as big as Phar Lap. As I said Monday if we all had the heart of Henry we would be unstoppable. H keep proving to yourself, that you can do this, we know you can, it's your turn.
Everybody today made me so proud, this is the reason I love doing this. Games like this are almost better than grand finals. As I said to the coaches and boys already.
"you just sent a message to the competition, but mostly you sent a message to yourselves".
Well done team, next stop Mitcham.
Cheers,
The team
Round 7
Round 7 saw us clash with Mitcham, on a ground unfamiliar to alot.
We started the day with high intentions of playing our brand of footy. We started with a good looking board and ground position. So off we went to stick to our guns and play our football.
The boys got rattled early again, which seems to be an ongoing event this season, and something we are working on as a group. How to prepare better for our games.
Mitcham knew how the play that ground to their advantage and they did, giving them a 6 goal head start. The boys were never fair off, they still persisted at every encounter toward the ball, once again showing us how they play great football together.
Through this adversity, we lost a couple of players to injury and were very under manned, and these kids were absolutely gutted that they couldn't continue the game. Yet at the same time this brings other players up, as they know that they all have a bigger role to fill.
There was some great passages of play throughout the game, then we lost focus and blazed away at goals, instead of looking at what was ahead, again things we are working on. Some of our smallest players, sticking tackles on kids twice their size, boys this is amazing to see, continue this effort and the reward does come.
Final score B: 5.7. 43 to M 16.6 102
Our players to note this week; Xane, Marley, Tom, Riley W, Max and Charley
Thanks guys, as we did on Monday night, talk about and made new goals to stick too, the second half of the year. It's time for all to re focus re group and be accountable.
Cheers,
The team.
Round 8
Round 8 saw us clash with Wantira south,
We started the day with high intentions of playing our brand of footy, the first qtr got off to a great start. We changed our tactics a bit and started to count " first to the ball", and we won this stat all day, well done boys.
Wantirna knew how to play their ground well, with some taller players than ours, they took advantage of setting the ball higher in the air to their advantage. The first half really was our game, yet again we couldn't convert on the scoreboard.
We lost our captain again to injury early in the game, sorry Lachy, we were very under manned, yet again, Max copped a hard hit and sat down for a while. Through adversity, the boys raised their own bar and continued to smash out good link up football and some solid defensive drives. Xane was great all day fighting to keep the ball in the forward line. Also Tom took to the challenge of first to the ball very strongly, and led by example all day.
There were some great passages of play throughout the game, then we lost focus and blazed away at goals, instead of looking at what was ahead, again things we are working on. Guys this was a solid performance, we worked on things at training which opened our forward line up more, which is a reward in itself, because you are constantly learning. The scores tell a good tale here, with how far we have come, from then till now.
Final score: B 3.4. 22, W 11.18.84
Our players to note this week: Tom, Xane, Maison, Ben, and everyone. It was a solid team effort guys.
Thanks.
Cheers,
The team
Round 9
This week was another great week for footy, hasn't the weather gone cold now.
We played Montrose at our home this week in another 14v14 match. What a game we played, fair, hard at times, and well umpired.
The boys focus has been on, "better starts to the game", and they did this so well this week. We went in determined not to let the 1st qtr slip away, and it
didn't. The fight from the forward 5 to keep that ball in our 50 was intense. Xane's attack on both the ball and the ball carrier was second to none, he had
a couple of big tackles resulting in turn over of the footy, congrats Xane.
The boys rattled Montrose this week only conceding 1
point for the qtr.
The second qtr was much the same, we had players stepping up all over the ground. Tom was playing like he was 6'3”, being first to the ball on most occasions taking good overhead marks, and repelling the ball outta the backline. Finlay was much the same this round, every mark sticking, showing us the football he can play. The focus and resilience these boys show week in week out is to be commended.
In the third qtr, Montrose scored their first goal, and showed our boys they weren't going to lie down. It was very competitive in the last half of the game, both sides showed great passages of play moving the ball easily. It was our day though.
On recovery Monday the boys made a list of the positives and not so positives for the game, here's their list:
Positives; teamwork, handballs, 1st to the ball, resilience, structure and control.
Not so positive; awareness of player and ground position, mid field not following players forward.
That's a massive difference boys compared to only a few weeks ago, when the positives were light on. The way you are switching on at training and on game day is proving what you all can achieve.
Players of the round : Tom, Xane, Finlay, Charley, Phoenix and Seth
Final score B 7.9.51- M 4.9.33
Well done guys,
The team
Round 10
Today we played Glen Waverley Rovers. It was hard again from the get go, down to 13 players due to injury and illness.
GWR were very supportive and they had 2 milestone games, with family and friends travelling far and wide.
The umpires and coaches nutted everything out before the game, so we took to the field.
The first quarter was very competitive and our big boys were on point. GWR slowly pulled away in the second quarter, our boys still in reach with only 4 goals down going into the half time break.
This is the benchmark of the competition this year, to be only 4 goals down at the half was amazing to see.
During the 3rd quarter GWR pulled away a bit more, we had a couple of scares during this quarter, with some friendly fire! This still shows our contest and want for the ball never waivers. With one more injury to us the game was called at 3/4 time.
The umpires and GWR again were great about this and understood that unfortunately for these kids our day was done and the risk to these kids was too great.
Players of note where; Lachy, Cooper, Seth, Maison, Finlay, and Henry
Thanks,
The team
Round 11
Vs Heathmont,
Still with only 12 kids this week we played Heathmont with a lot of help from the u13s.
With 6 kids coming up to us, Brooklyn, Jack, Grace, Mackenzie, Liam and Cobe, these kids all did an amazing job standing up, helping and facing a very strong u14s side. The scores did not matter during this game at all, we knew we were undermanned and under age.
The things we, as coaches enjoyed the most was the battle and heart of all the u13s that played this game with us. Not one of these kids backed down an inch, the girls especially did not let these bigger boys get over them.
As I stated at awards these kids then went and played another full game just after ours, that alone is to be commended. We came and watched Grace get punished in the ruck, knee after knee hitting her ribs, thigh and butt, yet she never gave in and most of the contests she won. Liam also played midfield most of his game, with as much gusto as our game. Brooklyn was in space all day leading here and there.
The scores at the end of the day were terrible for us, with 2 late outs, one sick on the ground, it makes it very, very hard to be competitive. Within that as I say the u13s and our remaining 10 players did their best to finish off the game.
Our awards and best players this week all went to the u13s well done to you all, with Grace getting our medal this week. Congratulations peeps and thank you very much it was greatly appreciated and onward and upward from here with these two teams.
Thanks,
The team
Round 12
Hey everyone,
Here we go, as we wind down to the end of the season. This week we played a great game of footy at home against East Ringwood, it was set from the start, great conditions and almost a full squad back. It was good to welcome back Riley H. Who's been out with a broken finger most of the season.
We got off to a flyer, kicking 3 goals in the first quarter, something we have been working on and it's paying dividends. Being first to the ball again makes a huge difference. Seth and Cooper did their best in the ruck most of the day against a taller opponent, they copped a few hard knees, and with some actual ruck training this week, we'll see how they change their direction. The midfield got moved around a bit too, giving people breaks when they needed it.
The rest of the game we saw heaps of great link up play, great teamwork and talk. We switched play when we could, we played on when we should. East Ringwood came back hard and if it wasn't for their luckless day on goal we would have had a big battle. At the half they were 7 points behind us.
The boys came out of the break with a purpose kicking another 3 goals to one point. The deep backline with Max and Marley has been working like a treat. Marley especially has been a stalwart down there all year. Max sitting in the hole and intercepting marks all day. The movement and forward pressure is amazing to watch when we are determined.
In the last we got a bit complacent, didn't look at where our team mates were, and bombed away, this is a bug bear of mine gents, we need to learn how to finish games better and be in control of the footy. Let's stay focused on the team goals and look to our forwards. Great team effort thou gents bravo.
Final score B. 8.11.59 ER. 2.15.27
Players of note this week; Marley, Seth, Ben, Tom, Max, Phoenix and Cooper with a bag of 4
Thanks everyone,
The team.
Round 13
Hi all,
Another great day for football vs North Ringwood. The venue was changed to our home ground, which gave us 2 home games in a row.
We focused on our starts again, and we had almost a full team, something very rare as we know. We got off to a great start again setting up the game ahead, three goals in the first quarter was the start we needed.
Our "big boys" had a day out today, starting from the middle swapping Seth and Cooper in the ruck has been working well. Riley. W has been such a force that was needed for our team, his run and attack on the ball is great to watch week in week out.
We crept away a little bit in the second and third quarters, maintaining our focus and attack on the ball. North never laid down fighting in each quarter, staying just in touch with us. Then the boys lost their way a bit during the 3rd and almost started fighting each other for a possession, this is something we tend to do when we are in front, but still being challenged.
The last quarter was very intense as the weather started to turn, we went into wet weather mode. We had a couple of small injuries during this time and North were on the march. Our boys knuckled down and started to really look after the ball, and hit the ball first again. The game came down to the wire, but we came out on top.
Final scores; Bays 7.8. 58 to North 6.9 45.
Players to note were; Lachy, Cooper, Seth, Phoenix and Riley.W
Thanks,
The team
Round 14
Hi everyone,
What a glorious way to finish off the season, twas a mild 17°c and the sun was shining down In Noble park. We faced a very different team this week down there, it was high energy all game. The coaches were great and so were the umpires. It put a lot of minds at ease, so Dave thank you for your words earlier on in the year, and the hard work behind the scenes by the team and the club.
I started this week with a speech about how football doesn't start in your size, not in your guns, it starts in your brain. If we think positively and behave positively on the field the rest will follow. I also asked the boys to focus on protecting their mates, talk, and not getting sucked in. Boy did they listen, starting the game with a 10 goal first half something to be commended.
The plan was to use our players that are on fire at the moment In their key positions to start this match, it worked a treat, Phoenix at CHF and Charley at FF was a sight to behold, the delightful delivery from the mid field set this up beautifully. All the boys down forward put in this week locking that ball in the forward 50m most of the game. Charley topped his career best with 6, Phoenix only got one in the books, the way he competed all day was great to see.
Marley and Max were getting a bit lonely down the wrong end of the ground, so they got brought into the game more in the second half and to do rotations with the mid field. It was great to see the captain back in almost full flight, whilst being supported by his lieutenants Cooper and Seth. Finlay had been working really hard on his marking and running straightforward after he gets the ball, his intercept marks all day were on point with not one dropped mark, he gave options from CHB running down the wing and creating space, this is something I could get used to as a coach.
All and all It was amazing to watch and positive signs ahead for this group of talented kids.
Final score B 17.21. 123 NP 1.3.9
Players of note this week: Phoenix, Xane, Lachy, Finlay, Marley, and Charley
Well done guys see you all at presentation day. Have a good short break and we'll fire up for next year.
Cheers,
The team
