U16 Girls Match Report
Round 1
Vs Montrose
Welcome to the season, today we finally got to step out onto the field and put all our hard preseason work into action. It was a debut game
for Megan and Kira, and also debut club games for Tyla, Ruby and Charlie.
It wasn’t quite the result we had hoped as we came up against a very experienced Montrose outfit. I couldn’t fault the effort and intensity of all of our players which has been a focus in the preseason. The tackling pressure on point and we were rewarded with multiple holding the ball decisions to give ourselves the best chance to move the ball forward. Voice and communication (which was another focus of pre season) was exceptional and heard right across the field. Thanks to all the parents who helped out on duties, looking forward to round 2.
Best: Keely, Raelene, Shaylee, Megan, Jade. Goals: -
Round 2
This round was ANZAC round where we come together to recognise men and women who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served".
We also celebrated Keely’s 50th game. We played against CHIRNSIDE park. They were another strong, well organised opponent. Like round 1 we gave effort from starting bounce to final siren. Our tackling pressure was outstanding as we received multiple hold the ball decisions. Megan was rewarded for her work in the ruck by winning the ANZAC MEDAL from CHIRNSIDE.
Best : Megan, Matilda, Keely, Leah, Jade

Round 3
R3 v Blackburn
Bayswater 9.11.65
Blackburn Red 4.0.24
This week saw us take on Blackburn on a perfect autumn afternoon at home. Right from the first bounce you could see that the girls were focused and committed. The tackling pressure was immense. We used the wind to our advantage and managed to put 3 goals on the board early. The second quarter was a bit of a see-saw with both teams scoring goals. In the third we again used the wind to our advantage and we managed to lock the ball in our forward line for most of the quarter. The wing players Carly Charlie Lily and Ruby setup behind the ball well. This allowed multiple shots on goal and we kicked 4 for the quarter. The last quarter was a bit quieter with Blackburn scoring 2 goals. Everyone played their roles and gave 100% effort 100% of the time.
Best : Shaylee, Shayla, Fenix, Jade, Jess, Matilda, Carly, Ruby Mac
Goals : Shayla 3, Fenix 3, Shaylee 1, Ella 1, Jess 1
Round 4
v Kilsyth 43-7 loss
Today we celebrated Mothers Day and Ruby Mac’s 50th game on a glorious Sunday afternoon. It was hot, damn hot and the girls worked tirelessly all day. We had a big team with 7 players on the bench. Rotations were difficult and many girls were trialled in different positions.
The first half was a tight affair with both teams moving the ball from end to end. There were some great defensive efforts from Lara and Keeley. The 5 girls who were rotating through the wings did a great job at positioning themselves so that the ball stayed in our forward half. We eventually scored a goal with a set shot from Jess. As with previous weeks, tackling pressure was immense.
The second half was much like the first but it felt as though the bounce of the ball always went Kilsyth’s direction which resulted in a few goals to them.
We had many opportunities in our forward line to score but unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on our field position.
Overall we should be proud of the way we played and not focus on the result.
Best - Jade, Matilda, Leah, Shaylee, Ava, Ella, Lexie
Goals - Jess.
Round 5
v The Basin 35-40 Loss
Today we faced off against the Basin on what was a beautiful yet cold Autumn day.
Before the march we celebrated Ella’s 50th game.
It was a tight tussle from the get go with both teams struggling to move the ball.
After some clearer directions at the qtr time break we managed to snag a couple of goals from the boots of Tori and Fenix. We took a small lead into the half time break but the job wasn't done. Both teams kicked goals in the 3rd term as the ball moved freely from end to end. There were some great handball chains involving Shaylee, Ella, Carly and Jade. There were some great pressure acts from Kira and Tyla. In the last qtr we fell behind by a couple of goals but we worked tirelessly and we scored one back but unfortunately time ran out and we went down 40-35. We will learn a lot from this game and be better next time.
Best - Shaylee, Jade, Grace, Jess, Tori
Goals - Jess 2 Tori Fenix Matilda

Round 7
v Blackburn
BJFC 2.5.17 Blackburn 7.9.51
Another brilliant winter afternoon which saw Ralene take charge as captain in Shaylee's absence.
Blackburn made a strong start which really put us on the back foot in the first qtr. After a reset at qtr time we managed to win the territory battle and put a few scores on the board. Tori and Summer had enormous contributions in the forward line which led to scores. Our pressure was so good in the last minute and it led to Ella having a shot on goal after the siren.
The third qtr was much the same as the second with great pressure from our forward and midfield. Blackburn's running capacity was just too strong in the 2nd half and they kicked a couple of goals to make the final margin 40 points.
Coaches award Grace. Listens. Follows instructions, willing to work on her game and try new things.
Best : Jess Jade Leah summer Tori
Goals Jess Jade.
Round 8
v Fairpark.
Bayswater 11.8.74
Fairpark 0.0.0
Another chilly dark afternoon. No rain thankfully no celebrations or milestones this week. But we did welcome Summa to the team.
The first qtr was a tight affair. We had numerous forward 50 entries but could only manage 5 behinds. After a reduction and reset at qtr time we came out firing. Ruby Mills led well off the half forward line, Shaylee was impenetrable in defence and was the start off many of our forward entries. Ella was a force up forward having direct hands in goals to Ava and Grace (first career goal)
18 points up at halftime is a tough place to be, as early goals to Fairpark and they would be right in the contest. But this was the best qtr of football we have played all season. Carly and Jade gave their all in the middle with 2nd and 3rd efforts which are a feature of their games. Lily did exactly what was asked in defence and came off her opponent numerous times and with clean possession was able to create multiple scoring opportunities. Shayla was a standout kicking 4 goals for the qtr. With Ruby kicking her 1st goal.
The fourth qtr was time to consolidate and move the magnets to give some players opportunities they might not have previously had.
Ella again was instrumental up forward with a great tackle that led to a goal to Shaylee and also managed to kick one herself. Grace kicked a second and Shaylee finally kicked that goal she deserved.
Overall it was a result that came from weeks of tough lessons and hard work. The hand ball game looked amazing and we started to understand how to create space for each other and create goal scoring opportunities.
Go Baysie!
Goals - Shayla 4, Grace 2, Ava, Ruby Mills, Ella, Shaylee, Jess

Round 9
**********Round 9 v south Belgrave********
Bayswater 4.7.31 South Belgrave 3.6.24
What another picture perfect day for footy.
Today we celebrated Shayla’s 50th game.
It was a hot contested footy all day and both teams had fierce tackling pressure. South Belgrave were dominant early but were unable to capitalise on field position. Some really clean ground ball pick ups from Carly and aggressive kicking forward from Shaylee and Jess saw Bayswater finish the first qtr strong and we were unlucky not to be awarded a goal to Ella.
In the 2nd qtr we dominated field position and Fennix kicked the first major of the game. Lily’s attack from defence was exactly what we have been asking the girls to do. We gave up a late goal and the margin was just 2 at the main break.
We had to do everything right in the 2nd half to get the result and with some wise heads in the back line (Keely and Ella) we were able to set the ground up and make it really hard for South Belgrave to score. Shayla kicked a miraculous snapping goal after some hard midfield work from Grace and Tyla, but was unfortunately injured in the act and took no further part in the game.
In the last qtr we had the majority of field position and Meghan was able to kick her first goal ever. Shaylee was dominant and kicked the sealer. A goal on the siren to South Belgrave saw the final margin end up 7 points. It was a tough game with most girls exhausted walking off the ground.
Goals Fennix, Meghan, Shaylee, Shayla
Best - Shaylee, Carly, Jess, Fennix, Grace, Meghan

Round 12
v Fairpark/Mooroolbark
Bayswater 8.13.61 Fairpark/Mooroolbark 0.3.3
Tonight was a special occasion as it was played at night under lights at the Bayswater senior oval. We also got to celebrate Ava’s 50th game.
Fairpark/Mooroolbark were restricted in numbers which meant that we had 9 players on the bench. Created some challenges for coaching staff, but also opportunity for new positions for some girls. Example: Keely was moved forward and kicked for the first goal in many seasons. We asked the girls to play a really defensive style and restrict the opposition scoring. This was highlighted by a huge tackle from Leah in the 2nd quarter.
Ruby and Tori kicked to great goals and as always the midfield group were dominant around the ground.
We had great representation in the crowd from the rest of BJFC and even some of the senior players were there to witness.
All in all it was a great experience and the win, and a night that hopefully everyone will remember.
Best Leah grace Carly Shayla Shaylee
Goals Ruby Shayla 3, Mac, Fennix, Shaylee, Jess,
Round 13
v Blackburn.
Bayswater 4.15.39 Blackburn 5.2.32
It was a wet day which made the ball difficult to control. Right from the opening bounce the girls had a steely look in their eyes. They were ferocious at the ball laying tackle after tackle moving the ball forward through handballs as Amy and I have asked. We hit the scoreboard early with 2 goals to Shayla. But Blackburn hit back late.
The pressure dropped off a little in the 2nd quarter but we still managed to pepper the goals but they just weren’t going straight. Again Blackburn hit back late and hit the front before half time.
We lifted in the third and Leah took a great contested mark and goaled from the kick. Although trailing at the last break there was nothing but positivity from the group. We brought the effort and intensity highlighted by a great 1 on 1 mark from Summer. Tori goaled to give us back the lead. We tackled with purpose and were very clean with our hands. We had multiple chances to clinch the win and in the end, did it through behinds.
It was a great 4th quarter effort
Goals Shayla 2 Leah Tori
Best Shaylee, Grace, Jade, Jess, Shayla, Ruby Mills, Raelene
Round 14
****Round 14 v south Belgrave********
Bayswater 3.4.22 South Belgrave 7.4.46
Another beautiful day for football. This time up at south Belgrave.
South Belgrave got the jump on us early and held a strong 20 point lead at half time. But after an honest qtr time address everyone really responded. We started to get our hands on the ball more and started to link up through handball. We managed to get on the board but South Belgrave still held a 24 point lead at the main break. Throughout the second half we managed to even the contest and possession around the ground and it was a very even game. We had to take the little wins in this game and winning the 2nd half was a win we could walk away with. It wasn’t the best way to finish the home and away season, but we fought it out and still managed to make finals.
That in itself is a massive achievement and I am excited to see what the next 3 weeks can be.
Goals Jess Lily Leah
Best Grace Leah Lily Matilda Carly Shaylee
Final 2
Prelim v South Belgrave
1.5.11 - 3.3.21
WE ARE HEADED TO THE GRAND FINAL!!!
What a day it was. A sunny yet chilly afternoon at Charles Green reserve had us face off against South Belgrave for the chance to play the Basin in the Grand Final.
Q1
Tough in and under quarter. Sth Belgrave had the better chances but our defence was solid as a rock. The ball didn’t really move around the ground too much and that probably worked in our favour.
Q2
Another tough slog, the South Belgrave kicked the first goal of the day. No one dropped their heads, we got straight back to work. We made a few position changes which stopped their ball dominance and we started to get more ball control. Although we did not kick a goal, we managed to create field dominance and pressure. This would turn out to be a key stepping stone into the last half.
Q3
We spoke at half time about staying the course and believing that the way we were playing would get the job done. We needed a spark though….and a spark is what we got. Shayla Jess and Fenix started to get their hands on the ball more, the ball was in motion most of the quarter.
Shayla kicked the first goal and everyone else lifted. The ball lived in our end with Grace and Raylene dominating in the air. Shaylee was the orchestrator across half back, whilst Matilda was keeping their best player quiet. Fenix put another goal on the board to a huge roar from the crowd and we would go into the last quarter with a 5 point advantage.
Q4
We knew they would come hard and they did.
It was more of a slog as the first there were lots and lots of stoppages. Megan and Grace probably became the difference and dominated the ruck, giving us first use and field position and marking anything that came near them. Lexie and Lily had some clutch rebounding moments and Keely never let her player get any free space. Shaylee put another one on the board to seal the win.
It was an inspired performance and one that I hope that can build belief and momentum next week against the undefeated Basin.
I am so excited for this.
Let’s get 'em Girls !!!!
Go Baysie!
Final 3
*********Grand Final v The Basin*********
Bayswater 4.1.25 The Basin 2.4.16
PREMIERS!!!!!!!
What a game, what a day. We walked away with a trophy, a flag and a match ball which means we won the game.
Memories were made today!
Over the finals series we have been focussing on 24 players all playing their role on the day. To do your bit for the team, to be selfless and do everything you can for the team. It’s never one individual that wins the game. It’s the team. Today was the epitome of that. Everyone was selfless and performed their role.
The start of the game didn’t go our way with the Basin scoring 2 early goals. But through persistence, effort and determination we managed to get 2 goals on the board through Shayla and Fenix. Quarter time was even at 12 each.
I took this as a win. We were hunting. Everyone knew we were in for the fight.
We wanted to turn the game into a contested territory battle to stop Basin's dominant players getting the ball. That’s exactly what we did. It was a scrap and a slog. Charlie’s goal effort had her subbed out with concussion. Basin kicked 3 points. We attacked in the last 2 minutes and Matilda kicked a goal on the siren.
The third quarter was much of the same. Hard, tough, slog. Raelene, Keely and Tyla were under pressure but kept repelling the F50 entries. Shaylee kept getting her hands on the ball in the middle, Grace and Megan were dominant in the ruck. These 2 have proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the finals.
We did not score and kept Basin to 1 point. This was credit to the toughness and resilience of the girls.
We needed to dig deep, we needed to fight, we knew they would come.
We dug deep and we fought. Ella and Shayla nearly combined for the sealer, before Jade snapped the winner from a stoppage. The noise from the crowd was deafening. There was still plenty of time to go, but through sheer guts and determination this awesome group of girls hung on and walked away as PREMIERS!
