Match Report – Under 17 – Round 5, 2018

U17 Boys – Bayswater vs Rowville Gold.

Having been re-graded after 4 tough rounds the boys took on D grade ladder leaders Rowville.

The mood in the rooms pre-game was positive and the boys hit the ground confident they could produce a good showing.

Despite fighting hard and having several forward entries in the first quarter we were unable to capitalise as the boys tended to rush their possessions, missing quite a few handball targets and dropping a few marks they would normally take.

The second qtr saw a much more composed effort from the boys. An early forward entry saw Braidyn Dunford mark on the lead before playing on and kicking our first goal before Daniel Brown marked strongly and slotted our second to have us just a few points down. When Matt Elvin kicked the first of his 2 goals for the day Bayswater found themselves in front on the scoreboard and well on top in general play. A late goal to Rowville saw them regain the lead at half time but the boys knew they were in with a real chance.

A two goal to four 3rd quarter saw us slip behind by 15 point heading into the last qtr but with Brayden Smith starting to impose himself on the forward line, kicking the first of a game high 3 goals and our midfield getting on top the boys believed they could still get their first win. A downside for the qtr was yet another shoulder dislocation for Braidyn Dunford, his 4th in 3 seasons, after playing an outstanding first two and a half qtrs.

The last quarter was as exiting as football gets. With two more goals to Brayden Smith and a fantastic goal from the in form Corey Dickson we hit the lead with 5 minutes to go only to see a miss kick from a Rowville player land in his teammates lap and the resulting goal have us 2 points down with less than two minutes to go. Several frantic last ditch efforts saw two behinds added and the scores level when the siren sounded.

A sensational effort by all the boys and the first step towards establishing ourselves as the team to beat in D grade this year.
